Honoring Our Heroes: Memorial Day Events and Celebrations

Memorial Day, observed on Monday, May 27, 2024, is a solemn day dedicated to honoring those who served and gave the ultimate sacrifice. Originating as “Decoration Day” in 1868, this day was established by the Grand Army of the Republic, a Union organization, to decorate the graves of war dead with flowers. It wasn’t declared a national holiday until 1971. This Memorial Day, a variety of events and ceremonies are taking place around Phoenix, offering both remembrance and celebration.

Memorial Day Ceremonies

University of Phoenix Flag Display (May 21-24)

Thousands of flags will be displayed on the lawn of the University of Phoenix campus, spelling out “Their Legacy Lives On.” Volunteers will take down the flags on May 24, and they will be donated.

Gilbert Historical Society’s Memorial Day Ceremony (May 27)

Hosted by the Gilbert Historical Society and the American Legion Post 39, this ceremony includes a flag ceremony, wreath laying, and music from the Ahwatukee Foothill Concert Band. Remarks will be made by Gilbert Mayor Jenn Daniels and USAF Retired Colonel, Cliff B. Stansell.

Anthem Community Council’s “A Day of Remembrance” Ceremony (May 27)

Featuring Rear Admiral William Putnam (retired) as the keynote speaker, this ceremony includes a POW/MIA ceremony and performances by the Musical Theater of Anthem and the Arizona Veterans Band.

Pioneer & Military Memorial Park (May 27)

This event features a Memorial Day ceremony with guided tours of Seven Historic Cemeteries, a display of Victorian-era fashion, and local groups in full regalia. Emceed by Marshall Shore, the unofficial state historian.

Litchfield Park Memorial Day Ceremony (May 27)

This 30-minute ceremony includes patriotic music, a floral tribute, “Taps,” a prayer, and a memorial presentation.
