Today at Desert Foothills Park , what started as a fun and carefree afternoon turned into a frightening reminder of why leash laws exist. During a small family and friends baseball game, an off-leash dog attacked a young girl—thankfully leaving her with only minor scratches—but the experience left everyone shaken.

While no serious injuries occurred, this incident could have been far worse. In moments like these, adults instinctively act to protect children, often without thinking twice about the tools in their hands. In this case, several of us were holding baseball bats, and in the chaos, the situation could easily have escalated further, potentially harming not just the child but also the dog. The owner, who had let their pet roam freely, was unable to regain control quickly enough to prevent the attack.

A Preventable Incident

What made this situation even more frustrating was observing other dog owners nearby hastily putting their dogs on leashes after the incident unfolded. It was clear they understood the risks—they simply chose to ignore them until something bad happened.

It’s important to remember that even the friendliest, most well-trained dogs can behave unpredictably in certain situations, especially around children or in crowded public spaces. A wagging tail one moment can turn into a defensive reaction the next, and it only takes a split second for things to go wrong.

Why Leash Laws Matter

Leash laws aren’t just rules—they’re safeguards designed to protect both people and pets. Keeping your dog on a leash ensures you maintain control over your pet, preventing accidents before they happen. Public parks are shared spaces meant for everyone to enjoy safely, whether they’re playing sports, walking their own dogs, or simply spending time outdoors with loved ones.

Off-leash dogs pose a risk not only to others but also to themselves. They may run into traffic, encounter wildlife, or become aggressive toward other animals—all scenarios that could have been avoided with proper supervision.

Let’s Do Better

This incident serves as a wake-up call for all of us. We shouldn’t wait for another scary moment—or worse, a tragedy—to do the right thing. Here’s how we can work together to keep our community safe:

  1. Always Use a Leash: Whether you’re at a park, trail, or neighborhood street, keep your dog securely leashed unless you’re in a designated off-leash area.
  2. Be Mindful of Others: Not everyone is comfortable around dogs, and some people may have allergies or fears. Respect their space by ensuring your pet doesn’t approach strangers uninvited.
  3. Supervise Your Pet: Even if your dog is friendly, stay attentive to its behavior and surroundings. Accidents can happen when least expected.
  4. Spread Awareness: Share this message with fellow dog owners. Encourage responsible pet ownership so we can create a safer environment for everyone.

No one wants to see a beloved pet injured—or worse—because of a preventable mistake. Likewise, no parent should have to witness their child being attacked by a dog while enjoying a day outside. By following leash laws and prioritizing safety, we can ensure that parks remain welcoming places where families, friends, and furry companions can coexist peacefully.

Let’s all do our part to avoid incidents like today’s from happening again. If you’ve ever found yourself tempted to let your dog roam free in public, please reconsider. Together, we can make Ahwatukee’s parks and open spaces enjoyable—and safe—for everyone. 🐾❤️
