Exciting changes are coming to the way we handle bulk trash in Ahwatukee! Starting on September 30, 2024, the City of Phoenix is transitioning to a new appointment-based collection system for bulk trash items, replacing the current quarterly collection program. This new system promises to streamline the process and offer several benefits to residents.
Why the Change?
The shift to an appointment-based system is designed to improve efficiency and convenience for residents. By scheduling specific pickup times, the city can better manage resources and reduce the likelihood of illegal dumping, a common issue during bulk trash collection weeks.
How It Works
Starting in September, residents will be able to schedule bulk trash pickups at their convenience. Here’s what you need to know about the new system:
Interactive Collection Schedule: An online tool will be available soon to help you schedule your bulk trash pickups easily. Keep an eye out for this feature on the city’s website.
Appointment-Based Bulk Trash: Residents can book a pickup time that works best for them, ensuring that bulk trash is collected promptly and efficiently.
Current Schedules: The current bulk trash collection schedule remains in effect until September 30, 2024. You can view the schedule for January through September to stay informed about upcoming collection dates.
What is Bulk Trash?
Bulk trash includes items too large for regular garbage or recycling containers. Common examples are furniture, small appliances, toilets, and large amounts of vegetation. It’s important to follow specific guidelines to ensure your bulk trash is collected:
- Placement: Bulk trash can be placed out for collection nine days before the scheduled pickup week. Make sure it’s out by 6 a.m. on the collection start date.
- Curbside Collection: Place items on the edge of your property, parallel to the street or curb, at least 5 feet away from fixed objects.
- Alley Collection: Place items along the alley property line, avoiding walls or blocking access.
Dos and Don’ts
Do:
- Follow placement dates.
- Bag and tie grass, leaves, weeds, twigs, and hedge clippings.
- Cut tree trimmings to less than 12 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length.
- Ensure piles are not larger than 20 cubic yards.
Don’t:
- Include loose debris, household trash, hazardous waste, or construction materials.
- Combine piles from multiple households.
- Include large appliances that use refrigerants, such as freezers or air conditioners.
Preventing Illegal Dumping
Bulk trash weeks can attract illegal dumping. Stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police or Public Works Department. Illegal dumping not only blights our community but also poses health and safety risks.
- Emergencies: Call 9-1-1
- Non-Emergencies: Contact Crime Stop at 602-262-6151
