At Madison Center for the Arts! 🎭✨
Get ready to be inspired, Ahwatukee! The Studio 111 Theater Company is bringing a heartwarming dose of hope and joy to the stage with their upcoming production of “Annie JR” —and it’s a must-see for families, theater lovers, and anyone who appreciates the magic of young talent. Featuring 45 East Valley children and teens, this enchanting musical will light up the Madison Center for the Arts in Phoenix on June 22 with two performances at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
A Story That Tugs at the Heartstrings
For those unfamiliar with the tale, “Annie JR” follows the plucky orphan Annie as she navigates life in a New York City orphanage during the Great Depression. Armed with optimism, wit, and an unshakable belief that “the sun will come out tomorrow,” Annie sets off on an adventure filled with laughter, love, and the longing for family.
“This story is incredibly close to my heart,” says Kimberly Lewis, founder of Dance Studio 111 and Studio 111 Theater Company. “My own mother grew up in New York orphanages, so the themes of resilience and belonging resonate deeply. It’s a universal message everyone can connect with.”
The Dream Team Behind the Magic
Under the direction of Jenefer Miller , who has helmed every Studio 111 production over the past decade, and musical direction by Meg Foote , this production promises to be a polished gem. Choreography comes courtesy of Avery Lewis , Kimberly’s daughter and a former Studio 111 performer herself, while Audrey Williams , another alum of the studio, lends her expertise as assistant director.
Together, this powerhouse team transforms raw talent into full-scale productions in just two-and-a-half weeks—a testament to their dedication and the remarkable abilities of their young cast.
“It’s truly a dream team,” says Lewis. “Their passion and hard work make the magic happen every year.”
Meet the Cast
Leading the charge is Kenna Kavanaugh , a 12-year-old dynamo stepping into the iconic role of Annie. With her undeniable charm and powerhouse vocals, Kenna is sure to capture hearts.
Joining her are standout performances by:
- Briarley Crandall as Miss Hannigan, delivering sass and comedic flair.
- Gavin Crandall (yes, siblings!) as Oliver Warbucks, the kindhearted billionaire whose life changes when Annie enters it.
- Molly Corbin as Grace Farrell, Warbucks’ compassionate and capable assistant.
Each member of the 45-strong cast brings unique energy to their roles, ensuring this timeless story shines with heart, humor, and heaps of personality.
A Legacy of Triple Threats
Founded in 1994, Dance Studio 111 has long been a cornerstone of performing arts education in Ahwatukee. In 2015, Kimberly Lewis expanded the studio’s mission by launching the Studio 111 Theater Company , aiming to create well-rounded performers skilled in singing, dancing, and acting—the ultimate “triple threat.”
“We believe in nurturing not just dancers but complete artists,” explains Lewis. “Adding theater was a natural step toward fulfilling that vision.”
In addition to its theater offerings, students at Dance Studio 111 have access to voice and piano instruction through Hackett Music Studio , housed within the same facility. This integrated approach ensures performers are equipped with all the tools they need to succeed.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Show
With its mix of toe-tapping tunes, heartfelt moments, and the boundless enthusiasm of young performers, “Annie JR” is the perfect outing for audiences of all ages. Whether you’re cheering on your favorite pint-sized star or simply soaking in the uplifting spirit of the show, this production is guaranteed to leave you smiling—and humming “Tomorrow” for days.
