As temperatures soar and fire season arrives earlier than ever, the Ahwatukee community is feeling the impact of the ongoing wildfires north of Phoenix. The Riverside Fire, the third wildfire to hit the Bartlett Lake area this summer, has disrupted businesses and heightened concerns as the region braces for a sweltering week ahead.

The Heat is On: Record Temperatures Expected

This week, Phoenix is set to experience some of the hottest days in June, with temperatures predicted to reach a scorching 115 degrees by Friday. According to Ted Whittock, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Phoenix, “We’re going to start this week with temperatures lingering right around normal for this time of year. Normal high temperature this time of year is 105 but then things will start to heat up Thursday, Friday and sort of linger into the weekend.”

The anticipated highs of 113 degrees on Thursday and 115 degrees on Friday are just shy of the all-time records set in June 2017, when Phoenix experienced highs of 119 and 117 degrees on June 20 and 21, respectively. The city’s hottest day ever recorded was an unbearable 122 degrees on June 26, 1990.

Businesses on the Brink: The Economic Toll of Wildfires

The early and aggressive start to the fire season has taken a toll on businesses, particularly those north of Phoenix. The Riverside Fire is the latest blaze to affect the Bartlett Lake area, causing significant disruptions for local enterprises. With three wildfires already this summer, the economic impact is mounting as businesses struggle to maintain operations amid evacuation orders and smoke-filled skies.

Local business owners, who rely on summer tourism and outdoor recreation, are facing unprecedented challenges. The fires have not only deterred visitors but also complicated logistics and supply chains. Restaurants, marinas, and recreational facilities are experiencing decreased patronage and increased operational costs due to the ongoing threat of fire.
